Kata & Weapons

Background of Kobujutsu Transmission

Ryukyu Kobudo is a collective term for the traditional martial arts of the Ryukyu Kingdom and Okinawa.

Kobudo flourished during the Sanzan period in the three regions of Nanzan (Oozato), Hokuzan (Nakijin), and Chuzan (Tamagusuku).

It is believed to have been introduced from southern China, particularly the Fujian region.

In the early 15th century (1400s), after the unification of the three kingdoms by Sho Hashi, these martial traditions were passed down to local communities by regional lords (Aji).

Following the invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom by the Satsuma Domain in 1609, the royal court declined, and warriors dispersed throughout the regions. As a result, kobudo gradually spread among the common people.
